Congratulate Adil Karamally as the Recent Recipient of the Joe Groh Foundation

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to people in the construction industry who are living with life-altering injuries. Once a year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil experienced a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg greatly impaired, causing foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors were concerned that he would ultimately end up confined to a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, causing financial tension on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help a person with foot drop walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the device in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.

Luckily, a professional at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the generous grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
