What Type of Thermostat Do I Have?
There are three types of thermostats:
- Manual—This is the typical dial-shaped thermostat. You won’t have error codes with this kind, but it’s also the least efficient for lowering utility expenses.
- Programmable—This thermostat has a digital screen and arrows you use to choose your desired temperature. You can also set daily programs to lower the temperature when you’re at work and set it higher when you return.
- Smart—You won’t have to make any programs on this thermostat, as it picks up on your routine. It intuitively adjusts the temperature when you or family members are gone to help you save on energy costs. You can also change the temperature anywhere using your phone or other Wi-Fi-enabled device.
As you’re aware the majority of technologically advanced things, there are common glitches that might happen. The majority of of these problems don’t need pro support and are simple to fix by yourself.

Display is Blank
If the screen is clear on your programmable thermostat, you could need to put in new batteries. If that doesn’t fix the malfunction or you use a smart thermostat, there could be a wiring issue.
Next, you should make sure the power is flowing for your furnace or air handler. Confirm the switch by the indoor unit is in the “on” position.
In addition to that, you should confirm all furnace cabinet or air handler doors/panels are sturdily in place.
A loose panel may activate the safety switch, which disconnects power to the unit.
While it’s less common, a blank screen may signify you should install a new thermostat.
Comfort Equipment Won’t Turn On
Make sure that your thermostat is set to “cool” or “heat,” not “off.”
In the summer, confirm you put the thermostat beneath the ambient temperature. In the winter, verify it’s higher. This sounds absurd, but we’ve seen it take place many times.
Confirm the power switch by your indoor system is in the “on” position. You should also comfirm the cabinet doors or panels are tight on your furnace cabinet or air handler. An unsecured panel can trigger the safety switch, stopping current to the equipment.
Heating or cooling still won’t run? Verify circuit breakers haven’t flipped and that your HVAC unit isn’t experiencing error codes.
“Cool On” or “Heat On” is Flashing
To begin, check your thermostat is on “cool” or “heat.”
Then, ensure it’s calling for the right system to turn on. This is typically shown by “cool on,” “heat on” or an illustration.
If these words or the icon is pulsing, your thermostat is in a five-minute delay state. This setting keeps your equipment from bad short cycling. This may occur if you lose power.
