Get Fast Emergency Heat Pump Repair with Our Memberships
A lack of system maintenance could be expensive. On average, an inefficient heat pump could eat up to 10 to 25 percent more energy, based on findings from the U.S. Department of Energy. Your heat pump may also be more likely to become damaged or fail prematurely.
Troubleshooting Your Heat Pump Issue
Heat pump not running right? See our list of common problems below.
- No Heat. Make sure your thermostat is set to “on” and “heat.” A circuit breaker may have flipped, but in some cases it’s because the thermostat itself doesn’t work with heat pumps.
- Insufficient heat. Poorly-maintained air filters, fan and coils could reduce airflow and damage the system. Exchange the air filter each month, keep the coils and fan clean, and clear away yard debris collecting nearby. Your system could also be dealing with clogged ductwork, malfunctioning valves or reduced refrigeration flow.
- Cold air instead of heat. The air from your heat pump usually isn’t as warm as a conventional furnace. But when the air is still too cold, adjust the thermostat to emergency heat and at least 5 degrees higher than the inside temperature. If warm air is still the result, there could be an issue with the outdoor unit. Cold air is usually the result of a problem with the thermostat or air handler. The system might even have gone into defrost mode to try and stop it from freezing. When you’ve noticed frost or ice around the outdoor coil, the system could have a broken defroster timer or control module, or the refrigerant may be running low.
- Heat pump starts and stops often. Replace the air filter and then monitor your thermostat, as it might have to be recalibrated or it requires new batteries. When it’s cold and the heat pump is running constantly, your thermostat could be set incorrectly. Additionally, some models of heat pumps may struggle to work efficiently around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Rattling, grinding or squealing sounds. If you hear a rattling sound, you may need to tighten the cover panels. But if you’ve heard noises you’d describe as scraping, grinding, squeaking or squealing, shut the system off and call Service Experts Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing. Those noises may point to a serious problem.
